Grove Menzieshill first club to attain Scottish Student Sport Approved Community Club Link status

Top hockey club formalises link up with University of Abertay Dundee Hockey Club

Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club has attained Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Approved Community Club status. SSS, the national co-ordinating body for college and university sport, is running a pilot initiative in Tayside & Fife, which formalises and calibrates community sports clubs links with student clubs. Club spokesperson Kerr Thomson said ”We see the mutual benefits of formalising our partnership with Abertay University hockey through the SSS initiative and look forward to continue our work with the students, enhancing their on and off-field hockey experience.”
Every SSS Approved Community Club Partnership will be unique in its own way, as it is aimed at ensuring student sport and community sports clubs benefit from the partnership. Community sports clubs need to evidence that they meet a minimum of three of the four criteria, one of which must be the offer of a discounted membership rate to students. The other areas the award concerns itself with are; raising the standard of student sports experience by access to quality community club coaches, access to appropriate facilities to train and play on and opportunities for students to coach within community club school and youth programmes. The award is initially for three years, with an annual review to ensure both parties are continuing to benefit from the link up, with the aiming of sustaining and progressing a partnership that will last for years to come.
Iain Stewart, SSS Tayside & Fife Regional Coordinator, is upbeat about the impact the initiative can have ”We believe student sport and community sport need each other to survive and thrive. Getting Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club to buy in to the initiative is great in the early stages. We have several more link ups to announce in the coming weeks, across a range of sports, that will support college and university sports clubs.”
