Glasgow University women provide the first big result of the season

With champions Watsonians not involved in Sunday’s Women’s Premiership action the chasing pack had the chance to slip into pole position; Clydesdale Western did just that, but Western Wildcats fell short.

Clydesdale were again in fine scoring form with six without reply against St Andrews University. There were doubles for Ava Graham and Millie Steiger, with Jenny Eadie and Rhiannon Carr scoring the others.

Western Wildcats succumbed at home to Glasgow University – the result of the season so far. The only goal emanated from a Glasgow breakaway, which was finished off by Maddie Lumsden. Thereafter Wildcats huffed and puffed but were unable to break down the students` defence and the Cats were the victim of a big result for the Glasgow students.

Grange completed a hat-trick of draws, on Sunday it was a 2-2 draw with GHK.  Described as a “tough fought game” GHK had the better of the first half and were rewarded by a strike from Lucy Williamson. However, Grange came back strongly in the third quarter and took a 2-1 lead through Ella Mundell and Eve Downie, and looked like taking the three points. But with five minutes left Jess Halley converted a penalty corner to level the score. GHK have preserved their unbeaten record but dropped a couple of points.

Edinburgh University, last season`s runners-up, enjoyed their first win of this season with a convincing 5-0 win over Uddingston at Peffermill. The students had a first half lead courtesy of Itske Hooftman, but in the third quarter Ava Smith produced two further goals for an extended lead. Hooftman added a fourth to secure the three points and in the final quarter Harriett Platt bundled home a fifth after a goalmouth scramble.

Hillhead came to life with a 3-1 win over Fjordhus Reivers in the Borders. Hillhead`s Jenny Sinclair, said: “It was a great team game and we bounced back really well from our loss yesterday.” Hillhead`s scorers were Zoe Irvine, Alex Burton and Julia Baldwin while Izzy Molyneux got the Reivers` consolation.
