GHK create upset

Newly promoted GHK produced the first shock of the season in the
first week of The Subway National League with a spirited 2-1 home
win over Glynhill Kelburne.   The Paisley outfit pressed
for most of the first half and the GHK defence had to work hard to
keep it goalless, goalkeeper Bernie Wong keeping a clean sheet with
several good saves.  The home side did have a chance to sneak
ahead, Fiona Donald`s penalty corner effort was well stopped by the
stick of Kelburne goalkeeper Cath Rae.

But it was GHK who went ahead seven minutes into the second
half, Jenny Morris made the running up the left, her cross found
Stephanie Mirner in open space at the top of the circle and she
smashed the ball home.  The Paisley outfit equalised few
minutes later, but undaunted GHK searched for the winner, a pass
out of defence from Beth Vance found Donald, she beat a defender
and fired a shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net for
the winner.

“We were more concerned that we played well, we played a
different formation and were looking to improve on our pre-season
performance.   Anything we took from the game today was a
bonus,” said Fiona Donald, GHK captain. 

Donald paid tribute to new coach Kris Kane, recently retired
goalkeeper at Western Wildcats.  “Kris has been working with
us for the last three to four weeks, and we have made a huge amount
of progress.”   Kane has taken over from Tomasz Kotulski,
a former Polish under 21 internationalist and Greaves Clydesdale
midfielder, who has taken up a new coaching post in the
Netherlands.
