GB women in semis without striking a ball
OLYMPIC GAMES
Laura Bartlett and Emily Maguire, the two Scots in the
Great Britain women`s squad, are still on track for an Olympic
medal when Danny Kerry`s team qualified for the semi-final stages
without striking a ball.
Originally Team GB had to get a result against world number one
Netherlands to guarantee a semi-final spot, but in an earlier game
yesterday third placed China unexpectedly lost to Asian neighbours
Japan, Rika Komazawa getting the all-important strike with a
54th minute penalty corner strike.
China, the losing finalists in the Beijing Games, consequently
fell out of the race, still two points behind GB with their pool
programme finished, leaving GB and the Netherlands to fight it out
for first and second place in the pool. GB need to win
to claim pole position with their superior goal
difference.
