Edinburgh University noses in front in women’s European position race

Edinburgh University moved a point ahead of Clydesdale Western in the bid to secure the runners-up spot in the women’s Premiership and the second European place after drawing 2-2 with champions Watsonians at Peffermill today.

It is still very much up in the air as Clydesdale now have a game in hand and much will depend on the head to head between the teams on Tuesday evening.

The students took the lead in the first quarter with a penalty corner conversion by Ava Smith which flew into the roof of the net. The champions levelled in the second quarter, Sarah Jamieson beat two defenders and smashed the ball into the net.

After the interval the Edinburgh students took the lead for the second time at another penalty corner, a good routine was finished off by Amy Costello.

However, with five minutes left a rebound off the keeper fell to Jamieson who proceeded to put the final touch to the move for another equaliser and a share of the points.

And so on to Tuesday evening for the next stage in the saga.
