Alan Forsyth collects Player of the Year award in England

Scotland international Alan Forsyth is the Players’ Player of the Year in England and the Surbiton striker is also in the men’s Premier Division Team of the Year after his season-long, goal-scoring purple patch, writes Nigel Duncan.

Paisley-born Forsyth, a former Scotland Player of the Year, scored 21 goals in the regular season to top the individual scoring charts, the first Scot to do so.

He claimed 19 field goals plus one penalty corner strike and one penalty stroke and was six goals ahead of his nearest challengers, Samuel Ward (Holcombe) and Mark Gleghorne (Beeston).

The 23-year-old, who has recently been capped by Great Britain, was presented with a salver before Surbiton’s play-off semi-final against Reading at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London on Saturday.

Surbiton, who finished second in the Premier Division, seven points behind pace-setting Holcombe, were beaten 4-2 leaving Forsyth and his Scotland teammates, Chris Grassick, Nicky Parkes and Willie Marshall, “gutted”.

Other Scotland players were also involved in crucial play-off matches at the weekend.

Ed Greaves, formerly of Kelburne, and Murray Collins helped Loughborough Students book a place in Division One next season by coming top of men’s Conference North .

Ex-Hillhead and Grange player Wei Adams assisted as Canterbury beat the drop from the Premier Division for the second season in a row.
