NASUWT National Primary Festival
Scottish Hockey is proud to continue thier partnership with NASUWT, the largest teaching union in the UK, to be title sponsor of the National Primary Festival (NPF).
The event, branded as the 'NASUWT National Primary Festival', has been held annually at Peffermill, Scotland's National Hockey Academy in Edinburgh, and brings together young hockey players from throughout Scotland, including those as far afield as Shetland, to play in a fun yet competitive environment. The event has been running for the past five years and involves over 400 children with a range of abilities. In 2015 the event moved to the new Glasgow National Hockey Centre, home of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games hockey competition.
The NPF is the largest hockey participation initiative for 10-12 year olds of its kind, offering fun and competitive games. This year, Scottish Hockey hope to increase the number of participating local authorities through the continued support of the NASUWT, which amongst other benefits, will hopefully make the Festival more accessible to those teams further afield.
Taking the format of a round-robin with no out right winner, the Festival aims to encourage learning and teamwork, rather than winning, with each child receiving a participation certificate. Participants include pupils from P6 and P7 who play under the 'STIX' model, which helps promote the sport to younger players, and involves mixed teams of boys and girls of 6 players on the pitch (10 in total) playing on a quarter size of a hockey pitch.
The aim is to have as many of Scotland's 32 local authorities represented on the day by encouraging regionalised events organised by Scottish Hockey's Development staff in conjunction with each local authority's Sports Development Officers and Active Schools Co-Ordinators. These feeder events will provide the teams which will then participate in the main festival in Glasgow which is held on the first Thursday of June.
If you are interested in getting involved in a local event please email Katie Brown who will be able to put you in touch with your local development contact.
The support of the NASUWT offers a significant step in supporting and encouraging participation of hockey at a primary school level and we very much look forward to working with them in promoting the event.
